IGCSE & A-Level Exam Fees in Dubai 2026: Private Candidate Complete Guide

Every September, the same WhatsApp groups light up: “Anyone know the IGCSE exam fees for private candidates this year?” “Does my daughter need a NOC if she left school in June?” “Why is the British Council website so hard to navigate?”

I’ve fielded these questions for five admission cycles now. The fees change annually, the deadlines shift, and the three exam boards — Cambridge, Edexcel, Oxford AQA — each publish separate PDF price lists on the British Council site. No single page puts it all together.

This guide does that. Every figure below comes from the official 2026 British Council UAE price lists (Cambridge Oct/Nov 2026, Edexcel Jan/May-June 2026, Oxford AQA Jan 2026). All fees include VAT. Verify before you register — boards update prices without notice.

Why This Guide Exists

The British Council runs all three boards at centres in Dubai (Oud Metha), Sharjah (Omran Tower), and Abu Dhabi (Al Bateen). You register online, pay online, email documents, and show up with your Emirates ID. Simple in theory. In practice, parents waste hours hunting for:

  • Which board charges what per subject vs per unit
  • Whether the “late fee” is AED 445 or 2x the standard fee
  • If a NOC is needed when your kid hasn’t been in school since March
  • Whether private candidate certificates count for UAE university equivalency

This post answers all of it. Bookmark it. Share the WhatsApp group link.

2026 Exam Fees at a Glance

Board Qualification Pricing Model Typical Cost (Core Subject)
Cambridge IGCSE Per subject AED 1,060
Cambridge IGCSE Per subject (languages) AED 1,380
Cambridge AS/A-Level Per subject (multi-paper) AED 1,200–2,500
Edexcel IAL Per unit AED 535–1,120
Edexcel GCE A-Level Per subject AED 2,435–2,530
Oxford AQA IAL Per unit AED 640–735

Rule of thumb: Cambridge = per subject. Edexcel IAL = per unit (modular, retake one unit). Edexcel GCE = per subject (linear). Oxford AQA = per unit (newer, fewer centres).

Fewer UAE centres run Oxford AQA. Email sch.dxb@ae.britishcouncil.org to confirm your subject runs in Dubai before registering.

Registration Process — Step by Step

1. Choose your board and subjects

Cambridge IGCSE → broadest subject range, most UAE schools use it.
Edexcel IAL → modular, retake single units. Best for sciences/maths.
Oxford AQA → newer, UK curriculum alignment. Fewer centres.

2. Check subject availability

Not every listed subject runs at every centre. Email:
– Dubai: sch.dxb@ae.britishcouncil.org
– Abu Dhabi: sch.auh@ae.britishcouncil.org

Ask: “Is [subject code] running in [series] at [centre]?”

3. Register online

  • Go to British Council School Exams Registration System
  • Create account / log in
  • Select exam series (Oct/Nov 2026, Jan 2026, May/June 2026)
  • Add subjects with exact syllabus/option codes
  • Pay fees online (credit/debit card)

4. Submit documents (email to your centre)

  • Copy of Emirates ID or passport (must match registration name)
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) — ONLY if currently enrolled in UAE school
  • Previous statement of results (if retaking)

5. Receive Statement of Entry

Arrives ~3 weeks before exams. Shows dates, times, venue. Bring original + Emirates ID to every exam. No ID = no entry.

No Objection Certificate (NOC) — When You Need It

Required only if you’re currently on a UAE school roll. The letter must:

  • Be on school letterhead with official stamp
  • State student’s full name and current grade
  • Confirm school has no objection to private entry
  • Acknowledge certificate won’t be MOE-endorsed
  • Be signed by principal and parent

Template: British Council website → Downloads → “No Objection Certificate” (Word doc).

Without NOC, school candidates cannot register as private candidates. If you’ve formally withdrawn, provide leaving/transfer certificate instead.

FAQ — Real Questions Parents Ask

Can I mix Cambridge IGCSE and Edexcel A-Levels?
Yes. Universities accept both. Many UAE students do Cambridge IGCSE then Edexcel IAL for modular retakes. See our CBSE to UAE admissions guide for how mixed qualifications map to UAE university entry.

Will my private candidate certificate be accepted for UAE university admission?
Yes, for most universities. But Ministry of Education equivalency (required for federal universities, Golden Visa, some regulated professions) needs school-endorsed certificates. Check with your target university. Khalifa University admissions require equivalency for some programs.

What if I miss the regular deadline?
You can still register during late periods but fees double (low late) or triple (high late). No registration after high late deadline closes. Plan ahead.

Do I need a NOC if I left school last year?
No. NOC only required if currently enrolled. If you’ve formally withdrawn, provide leaving certificate/transfer certificate instead.

Where do I find the exact syllabus codes?
Cambridge: cambridgeinternational.org. Edexcel: qualifications.pearson.com. Oxford AQA: oxfordaqa.com. British Council price lists include codes.

Can I retake just one unit in Edexcel IAL?
Yes. That’s the modular advantage. Cambridge and Oxford AQA are linear — retake the full subject.

How do I get my results?
Online via British Council portal (Cambridge) or Pearson Edexcel Online (Edexcel). Certificates mailed to centre ~8 weeks after results.

What to Do Next

  1. Pick your exam series and board based on your timeline and retake needs
  2. Email sch.dxb@ae.britishcouncil.org to confirm subject availability at your centre
  3. Gather documents: Emirates ID, NOC (if needed), previous results
  4. Register during regular period to avoid 2x–3x late fees
  5. Book travel/accommodation if your centre isn’t local
